When Abraham heard the words “I will” he knew with certainty that God was affirming the promises, though they were still in the distant future. In other words, Abraham didn’t just cross his fingers and hope that God would bless him, multiply him, and grant him the land. He was convinced that once God spoke it, it was done. Even though Abraham never saw the fullness of God’s promise in this lifetime, he was already certain that he would experience it in the world to come.
